The Temperature of Your Soul

How can ONE PERSON with ONE BRAIN have TWO VOICES inside of their head with TWO polar opposite views? Are we good people or are we bad people? Good you say? Well how can you be good but do bad things or even do bad things and enjoy those bad things? I would think that a person that does bad things and enjoys doing bad things is a bad person. Confused now if you are actually good or bad? Or where do those thoughts come from? I thought so.

Well first I need you to understand that you are a person made in the image of the Most High God. God is a triune being who is one and three and also three in one, and we know this because it is recorded “Let Us make man in Our image” (Genesis 1:26) describing more than one. If we were made in His image and likeness we would also be triune, being one in three and three in one. It is as if we have three layers to our being.

So what are the three layers? They are the spirit, the soul and the body (1 Thessalonians 5:23). You must understand that you are a spirit, you have a soul, and you live in a body; most importantly you are not a body or a soul. Your body is just a vessel or a suit and we know this because when we die life leaves our body, but our body is still on earth. Your soul is your will, mind, and emotions which is operated in one’s control panel or brain. Your very essence is that of a spirit. These three layers that dwell within us are synonymous with the triune God. Our flesh is made in the image of Jesus the only one in the God-head to be made flesh. Our soul is made in the image of God where our emotions and creative ability originated. Finally our spirit is made in the image of the Holy Spirit, the very breath of life.

Now that you understand that there are three layers to us as humans, I need you to know that your spirit and your flesh are totally contrary to one another (Galatians 5:17). Your spirit is of God and is pure and your flesh, being from the earth, is corrupt since sin entered in the beginning (1 John 3:8). Your flesh only wants to do what pleases itself and has no regard for others while your spirit only wants to please God where it originates from (Romans 8:5-7). This is why you hear two inner voices that always conflict while one whispers “No” and the other screams “Yes.” The apostle Paul speaks of this conflict of wanting to do good but failing and wanting to abstain from evil but he does so anyways (Rom 7:15,18-19).

Well where does that leave that third layer, the soul? If you remember, the soul is the control panel where you get your will or ones determination, disposition or simply put their ability to choose. Also within our soul is the mind where we receive our intellect and creative ability and lastly our emotions which consist of happiness, sadness, anger, fear, etc. The soul is the layer that hangs in the balance of the two opposing forces within oneself. Because of the souls neutral position it can move on either end of the spectrum. That is why you can have emotions of happiness one day and sadness the next minute, or someone having thoughts purely good as feeding the homeless or as evil as committing an act of terrorism.

Imagine a gauge that measures the temperature of our choices. Both the flesh and spirit have insatiable appetites and whichever one is fed more becomes stronger. As one gets stronger its voice gets louder than its counterpart (Gal 6:9). Our soul literally yields to whichever one is hotter or the one we feed more, whether it be the flesh or the spirit. Make the choice today to feed your spirit the Word that is spirit and life (John 6:63), so you may fuel your soul.
